TUCUMCARI, N.M. (KFDA) - Ruben makes a stop in Tucumcari and learns how an art park is hoping to make the town an art destination.
Matty Mo, founder of Art City, says he moved to the town in 2021. His mom lives here and he came to spend more time with her.
“As I looked around town, I noticed that we had a vibrant tourism economy, but we’re lacking things to do in the evening and during the day,” said Mo.
Looking at art districts in places like Los Angeles or Miami, Mo says it’s allowed the towns or cities to grow.
He says it’s really important, but art is also the great equalizer. Everyone from a mathematician to a poet can look at an art object and connect around it.
“For young people to be able to express their ideas and connect with a broader audience or people that are maybe different than them is a really good thing for humanity as a whole,” said Mo.
He says he started Art City as a way to enhance the tourism economy that already exists here and, ideally, create economic growth for Tucumcari.
“When I think about art, it’s the ability to have a point of view and to practice making something and ultimately sharing it with the world,” said Mo. “And to have a space like this where I can do that, but I can also empower others to do that feels really fulfilling.”
Mo says whether it’s a massive success or just another blip on the radar, ultimately it felt important to try to attempt this.
He says he hopes people see it, enjoy it, and share it so that more people can do so as well.
“So if you’re on a road trip and you’re going between Amarillo or Albuquerque or vice versa, and you need a place to stop, forget Buc-ee’s. Come to Art City, walk around, enjoy our facilities,” said Mo.
For overnight guests, there is a shared kitchen and bath house. There are 13 large sculptures that guests can explore and interact with and take photos.
“We’re in like, some of the most beautiful country out here. We’ve got a grove of cottonwood trees. We’ve got a little pond. We’re working on building a pool. It’s just a great spot to stop and walk around for a few hours and take a break from the road,” said Mo.
